We want your old rechargeable batteries, and old cell phones!
Many rechargeable batteries contain a chemical that is one of the most toxic to humans: cadmium. Yet, it's amazing how many devices contain these batteries. Cordless power tools, "shake-powered" flashlights, "crank powered" emergency radios, cordless shavers, cordless phones, cellular phones, laptop computers, MP3 players, portable video games, portable DVD players, and much more all contain rechargeable batteries.
One of the most environmentally unfriendly items homeowners have is, ironically, the solar powered garden light! It's hard to believe that a tiny light that generates all it's own electricity from sunlight would be a big environmental hazard, but it's in the way we purchase and dispose of these units. The market is flooded with cheap solar lights, and most of them only last a year. When they no longer light up, most people just toss the solar light out in the regular garbage, not thinking of the consequences of the fact that there are thousands of these solar lights being buried in landfills every season. In many European countries as well as many of the US states, it's illegal to landfill rechargeable batteries. Maybe we Canadians will learn when we have to find a way to take cadmium out of our drinking water. Never landfill any rechargeable battery!
Greg's Electronics has partnered with RBRC, and did our part to help them recycle over half a million pounds of batteries and cell phones in 2007!
RBRC provides the recycling services to us at no charge, and supporting manufacturers even pay for the shipping. As well as the generic AA, C, D, and 9V rechargeable batteries, we recycle all other kinds of rechargeable batteries, including all cordless power tool batteries (from drills, saws, flashlights, etc), batteries from both cordless and cellular phones, camera and game system batteries, and those from other cordless appliances like solar powered 'moonray' lights, or two-way radios. Hand held cellular phones can also be recycled through this free program.
Drop off your rechargeable batteries to us anytime. (see our contact us page for our location) Outside of business hours, you can leave batteries just outside our door. If you are in our regular service area, give us a call, and we might be able to pick them up when we are close by.
